Sun comes out for ride out

Despite the torrential downpour during the morning, the hardy horsemen and women of the region arrived at Bladnoch Park armed with waterproofs and hard hats for the 2017 Wigtown Riding of the Marches.

Thunder and lighting roared overhead just before the 50 or so participants of the ride out left the showfield, led by Cornet Richard Oxley, Cornet’s Lass Lyndsay Wilson, Ensign Mairi McConnell and Marshall Rob Carr.

The colourful procession toured Bladnoch before arriving in front of the County Buildings at 2pm where Council Jim McColm handed the scroll to Richard Oxley and Councillor Katie Hagmann handed the Burgh flag over the Ensign Mairi McConnell.

With the skirl of the bagpipes ringing in their ears and an enthusiastic crowd lining the streets, the riders set off at a brisk trot out of town and round the countryside before coming back into Wigtown and doing a tour of many of the streets before finishing with a flourish back in front of the County Buildings in glorious sunshine and a welcome stirrup cup.
