Wigtownshire Ramblers next walk is on Saturday 22 October, a 7.5 mile Category C+ walk (moderate).

It is a circular walk from the shore at Craignarget via Auchenmalg and on towards Knock Fell and back via a different route. The walk is mostly along the beach, on farm tracks and very minor roads. The walk starts at 10:00am at the Shore Car park near Craignarget (NX 255 513). Meet for car sharing at the Breastworks, Stranraer or at the Riverside, Newton Stewart at 9:15am. If going directly to the start of the walk please inform the walk leader. New walkers are always welcome after phoning the walk leader on 01988 840268 for further information.

Last week the ramblers walk was the Glasserton Circular. Saturday was a typical October day with a ceiling of grey clouds and threatening rain. Nevertheless, thirteen ramblers assembled at Glasserton Church for a walk to the shore and back. The theme for the walk was ruins and rocks.

Near Rouchan burn was the first ruin, a derelict row of terraced cottages known locally as the Beggars Row. No reason was given for the name but it must have been home to 30 or 40 people at one time.

After lunch the weather brightened and they set off round the hill fort and across the fields to the cup and ring marked stone shown on the maps. On leaving the rock we returned to the cliff top and followed it eastwards towards St Ninian’s cave.
