Two walks were on offer this week for Wigtownshire Ramblers, a strenuous walk visiting Billy Marshall’s cave and a scenic walk up the Water of Minnoch to Glen Trool.
A dozen stalwarts gathered at Talnotry on Saturday morning, the objective to visit Billy Marshall’s cave on the flanks of Cairnsmore of Fleet, and on to the high ground beyond Meikle Mulltaggart.
Leaving the road at a point close to the Louran Burn we followed a vague path through the edge of the wood, keeping parallel with Burn, before finding a suitable crossing point and continuing upstream on the East bank. A wire fence marks the boundary of the forested ground, and beyond lay the open ground of the lower slopes Cairnsmore. Finding the access to the cave is not difficult if you know how to find your way there and know where to pinpoint it, but like a needle in a haystack if you don’t. No surprise that Billy and his band felt secure there. Torches and headlamps were provided for those who hadn’t been before, and twenty minutes or so were spent by them having a look around.
The brief break over, we retraced our steps for a short way, and then picked a sheep track that took us towards the start of the climb up the Nick of the Saddle, the lower point of the formation of hill between Cairnsmore and Meikle Mulltaggart. This is a continuous uphill grind, roughly following a fence line.
Two walks have also been arranged for this week; a strenuous route up the Merrick via the Buchan ridge and the Rig of the Gloon and a more leisurely walk to the Wood of Cree.
