Following a very successful year, Machars Movies is ready to start its new, extended 2014-2015 series of screenings, with the exciting prospect of greatly enhanced surroundings this autumn when the Big Lottery funded St Ninian’s Hall annexe is completed.
Commenting on the excellent support received, Ian Fraser, Vice Chair of the volunteer-run film group said: “It’s been a great pleasure to see many regular filmgoers from across the Machars, and even further afield make the trip here to the Isle of Whithorn. We also welcomed an increasing number of first-time guests who have been keen to see what we do, as well as enjoy the social experience that has developed over the past five years since our start.”
Screenings are fortnightly on Saturdays, and in this first group of films there will be the chance to catch up on some award-winning titles on the big screen – some recent releases, as well some films which have not been seen locally before.
“This Saturday (18 January) we’re kicking off with ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’, said Ian, “a delightful, witty and romantic comedy with a superb cast that we’ve had many requests to screen. At the beginning of February, a tribute to the late Nelson Mandela, when we will be screening ‘Invictus’, Clint Eastwood’s drama based on the first term of Mandela’s presidency of South Africa, and where he rallies the Springboks rugby team as it prepares for the 1995 World Cup Final against New Zealand.”
Machars Movies’ full programme for this spring is now published, and can also be seen at www.macharsmovies.co.uk. If you would like further information on the community cinema, Steve Robinson, the Membership Secretary will be delighted to hear from you (Tel 01988 500407).
