SOME 14 local Girl Guiding units will be attending a summer camp this year at Netherurd, with an Olympic theme.

A Guiding Olympic torch has been travelling around Wigtownshire allowing the different units to become acquainted before the big event.

The torch was designed and created by Michael Askew, grandfather of some of the Newton Stewart Brownies and Guides.

The flame began its journey 10 weeks ago in Drummore and ends its tour in Whithorn before travelling onwards with the girls to Netherurd.

On May 31, Newton Stewart Brownies and Guides hosted a sports evening at the Merrick Leisure Centre to receive the torch from Lochinch Brownies. All the girls enjoyed an evening of traditional races and fun, with success for all four units involved.

Newton Stewart Guides gained revenge winning the traditional races after being beaten in the netball by Lochinch Guides and it was reversed fortunes for the Brownies with Newton Stewart coming out on top in the netball after losing to Lochinch in the traditional games.

Special mention must go Sara and Donna who came along to referee the netball games, offering extra coaching to the girls on the night.

The evening ended with Newton Stewart Brownies handing the torch over to the Guides.
