Kirkcudbright Academy student Rebecca MacTaggart won the young chef competition organised by the Rotary Club of Kirkcudbright on October 1.

The competition, which has been run locally for the past five years, is open to anyone aged 11 to 17 years. This there was a healthy entry of 10 youngsters, each cooking a two-course meal for two, using local ingredients, all for under £10.

Rebecca’s winning menu was, smoked venison with raisin and potato terrine and a raspberry vinaigrette, followed by a trio of citrus cheesecakes. The other prize-winners on the day were Emma Hay, Katie Sproat and David Maxwell. The prizes were presented by Rotary president Anne Halliday.

Rotary worked closely with the Home Economics Department at Kirkcudbright Academy and particular thanks are again due to Isla Porteous for her enthusiastic support of the event.

The competition was judged by Martin Avey of Del Amitri Restaurant in Annan, Paul Wilkinson from The Castle restaurant in Kirkcudbright and Peter Wimbush from the Rotary Club of Kirkcudbright. The judges commented that the quality of cooking and presentation are of restaurant standard and improving each year. Ms Porteus is also to be congratulated for continuing to develop such talented young chefs.

The Rotary young chef competition was created to give young people the chance to show off their creative culinary talents, to promote healthy eating and to learn important life skills. The young chefs are judged on their healthy menus, planning and organisational skills, hygiene, preparation skills and, of course, the taste and presentation of the final dishes.

Rebecca now goes through to the next round, a Rotary area competition, which is followed by a district and a regional competition.
