Port William
Port William sits near the bottom of the Machars and is an example of a traditional fishing village.
Port William is a planned village, lying on the eastern shore of Luce Bay.
Founded by Sir William Maxwell of Monreith in 1770. The harbour, built for the convenience of his tenant farners was one of the first in western Galloway.
There is a great wealth of history in the vicinity of Port William going back through smuggling, and early Christian sites to the Mesolithic Age.
There is much unspoiled nature to be seen and the local businesses and services can provide for the needs of most visitors
Already set in an area of outstanding natural beauty and with two Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) within the bay, from 17th March 2005, Luce Bay, from Burrow Head to The Mull of Galloway has been designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) to protect the natural habitats of wild flora and fauna much of it rare and protected.
The unique statue of a typical Port William fisherman can be seen overlooking the bay and was donated by a local art student 1999.
