Facts, figures and silly titbits about Galloway!

Did you know?

Drummore is Scotland's most southerly village.

In 1954 Glentrool Village was built to house workers who were needed for the new forests being planted in the area. In 1956 the present school was opened in the village and the pupils moved up from Bargrennan School.

Garlieston was geometrically planned, and founded c.1760 as a port for the Machars and an estate village for Galloway House.

Galloway House (1740-2 & later), is the large mansion built by John Baxter for the Garlies (Earls of Galloway).

The harbour was built between1838 & 1855 for the several maritime industries that once existed with regular steamship sailings to Glasgow, Liverpool and the Isle Of Man.

The 19th century Mill wheel stands on Dowalton Burn, in working order but to no purpose as the original mill has gone.

A letter written by Daniel Defoe on his experiences of Galloway reads: The first town on the coast, of any note, is Kirkcubright, or, as vulgarly call'd, Kirkubry. It must be acknowledg'd this very place is a surprize to a stranger, and especially one whose business is observation, as mine was.

Here is a harbour without ships, a port without trade, a fishery without nets, a people without business; and, that which is worse than all, they do not seem to desire business, much less do they understand it.

"They have also white fish, but cure none; and herrings, but pickle none. In a word, it is to me the wonder of all the towns of North-Britain; especially, being so near England, that it has all the invitations to trade that Nature can give them, but they take no notice of it. They have a gold mine at their door, and will not dig it.

The Galloway Forest Park is the largest forest park in Britain covering 300 square miles.
