Choral society celebrates 120 years

KIRKCUDBRIGHT Choral Society (KCS) is celebrating its 120th anniversary this year with several events to mark this auspicious achievement.

Celebrations will begin with a “Soup and Sweet Lunch” on Friday, February 17, from 12pm to 2pm in the town’s Bowling Green Club House.

Tickets are £5.00 and are available from members of the Society and at the door.

The more unusual and exciting event, however, is the raffle of an original 32” and 32” framed oil on wood painting by renowned local artist Davy Brown. Titled “Sunset Clouds, Arran”, it is a vibrant, stunningly beautiful landscape looking at the hills of Arran from the Ayrshire coast.

The raffle tickets are actually post cards with a print of the painting featured on the card.

Each card is only £2.00 and enters you into the draw for this £3500.00 painting.

The winning card will be drawn at the KCS’s April 21st performance of Carl Orff’s magnificent ‘Carmina Burana’. The painting will be displayed in the window of Lily Knowles Florist’s Shop at 20 St. Cuthbert Street and the cards will be available there as well as from Choral Members.

Davy Brown is represented by the High Street Gallery in Kirkcudbright.

All of the activities this year are aimed at securing the future of the KCS with all the joy, excitement and health benefits that one experiences as part of a singing group.

Currently, there are 75 singers, one of whom has sung with the group for 50 years, as well as many who have sung with the group for at least 40 years.

Under the leadership of Michael Appleford, Musical Director, they have grown significantly in the last few years and all want that momentum to carry into the future.
