Children’s novel set in Wigtown

The Crow House

The Crow House

JUST in time for Christmas comes a new children’s novel set in Wigtown, highlighting some of the Book Town’s quirks.

‘The Crow House’ is a mystery/horror novel aimed at 9-12 year olds exploring the unexpected side of the town through slips in time, a thoroughly sinister villain – and a book with definite links to darkness.

Time travel was never this inconvenient – or terrifying. Holly and Callum have to cope with a dangerous old book, a witch (perhaps) and worst of all, the cold-eyed Hermetic Doctor of Wigtown: Jared Sliddery, inhabitant of The Crow House.

‘The Crow House’ is the work of well-known poet Jean Atkin and is her first novel for children.

She said: “I wrote ‘The Crow House’ because when I first came to D&G twelve years ago, Wigtown’s wide street, Georgian bookshops and blue estuary began to inhabit my imagination and wouldn’t go away.  After a while the people began to appear: a girl leading a pony through a snowy graveyard; a boy opening a worn old door that led straight into a pine forest that shouldn’t be there.”

After taking advice from Inga McVicar at local literary consultancy Full Paper Jacket, Jean took the step of publishing ‘The Crow House’ as an eBook on Amazon for Kindle and other mobile devices. It can also be downloaded to a PC.

There are plans for a paperback edition in 2013.

Jean added: “I also work as a Writer in Education and there’s a website for ‘The Crow House’ which is actively looking for children’s reviews – it’s a great way of encouraging reading and providing a place where their opinions can be published.”
