SATURDAY (26 May) will see Dumfries and Galloway Festival’s BIG LIT Day come to Gatehouse.

BIG LIT Day offers the opportunity for lovers of a good read and lively performance the very special chance to hear and meet some of Scotland’s literary stars in a warm and friendly atmosphere, participate in free workshops, see an exhibition of illustration from rising young artists and experience SHED by John Hudson, a fascinating cockney sound work playing throughout the day.

Folks will be able to buy books, and enjoy BIG LIT menus specially prepared for the day. Festivities start at 10.00 am at the Riverside Cafe, Mill on the Fleet with an eat-as-much-as-you-can BIG LIT breakfast with entertainment from ‘guerrilla’ poets who will accost folk (in the nicest possible way) in hairdressers, on doorsteps, in bars and along the High Street.

One of Scotland’s favourite poets, Liz Niven has agreed to be one of the intrepid ‘guerrillas’ alongside introducing novelist Alan Bissett, a nominee for Scotland’s top literary prize.

There will be song-writing buskers at the Saturday Market, a range of seriously good award winning novelists and poets reading from their work or launching books, a Publishers Market exhibiting The Cream of Scottish Pamphlet Publishing with free impromptu readings, poems to read in many High Street windows and Dr Who star Annette Badland at The Bakehouse in the evening performing a selection of Poet Laureate Carol Anne Duffy’s amazing poem sequence about the wives of famous men.

The day will end at The Mill on the Fleet with a storming music session with musician and funny-man Ewan McVicar singing the songs and telling the stories of outrageously funny folksinger Hamish Imlach.

“It should be a fantastic day out,” said Chrys Salt, Literature Convener of the Festival.

“Local businesses and venues have been very generous with their sponsorship, enabling us to offer folks a free programme with biographies, a map, times and locations of events so they can make the most of the goodies on offer.”

Tickets can be purchased from the Box Office, Mill on the Fleet 01557 814099. There is a five for the price of four ticket offer.  Further information from The Bakehouse 01557 814175 www.thebakehouse.info
