Torches go on display

Did you miss out on seeing the Olympic torch last month? Or maybe you just want a closer look?

Come to Stranraer Museum this summer and you can see one of the London 2012 Olympic torches on display.

Carried by local resident Debs Millington on June 8 , the torch is made of gold-coloured aluminium, perforated with 8000 holes representing the 8000 runners who carry the Olympic flame around the UK. The torch is on loan from Debs who ran her 300 metres (plus an extra 300 metres on behalf of an absent runner) in Girvan.

The torch is on display as part of Stranraer Museum’s new exhibition “Fun and Games: Wigtownshire at Play”.

The exhibition also contains a range of objects and photographs of local sporting events, including a recent medal won by Abigail Brown of Stranraer Curling Club; the Featherie golf ball, first introduced in 17th century; Mrs Skeldon’s bowling uniform; various football trophies; Stranraer marathon medals; and sporting images.

The exhibition is family friendly with a super-sized Snakes and Ladders board and “New Age Kurling” for kids and adults of all ages to try (no ice required!). Plus there will be free craft workshops for children every Friday at 11am from July 13 to August 31.

All welcome, booking is recommended, but not essential, under-eights must be accompanied by an adult. For more details contact Stranraer museum on 01776 705088.
