Conference for local writers

A conference and networking day in Castle Douglas will offer Dumfries and Galloway’s writers an opportunity to develop the skills they need to promote themselves and their work.

The conference, on Saturday, June 23, at the Urr Valley Hotel, Castle Douglas, has been organised by Mary Smith, creative arts business advocate for literature. It boasts a line up of top-class speakers, including award winning writer and nationally renowned expert in effectively using social media, Nicola Morgan, who has published around 90 books – both fiction and non-fiction.

Mary Smith said: “I’m very excited we have Nicola Morgan as guest speaker as she has clearly demonstrated how using social media effectively can lead to increased sales. She will tell conference participants why authors need to use social media to promote their work. She’ll include the advantages – and the downside and pitfalls – as well as letting writers know what is the least they can get away with. And she will be providing lots of tips.”

As well as hearing informative, entertaining and thought-provoking talks, participants will also have the opportunity to question Durisdeer-based author, Janice Horton about her experiences of e-book publishing. Janice’s two novels, Bagpipes & Bullshot and Reaching for the Stars have both been successful. Inga will also be available to answer questions.

Mary said: “I’ve met a number of writers in the region now. High on their agenda is social media and how to use it to advantage along with wanting to learn how to improve self-promotion skills. I think the conference will prove to be invaluable to writers. An important part of the day is the time allowed for networking. Writing can be a lonely business and we are offering writers the opportunity to meet and talk to other writers, to share information and exchange ideas.”

The writers’ conference and networking day is from 10am to 4pm and costs £15, which includes lunch and refreshments. Places are limited and tickets can be booked through the Midsteeple on 01387 253383. For more information contact Mary Smith on 01556 504476 or email mary@stewartry.co.uk
