Wigtown Talks and Walks group met on January 19 to hear Nic Coombey’s illustrated talk dealt with ‘Development of Towns and Villages’ in the region.
From the earliest settlements of ‘fermtouns’, he considered how some prospered and grew in importance, perhaps from their position on trading routes or at river crossings; and the reasons why others such as Polmaddy failed to survive, whilst others again were planned but never materialised, like Cubbox. Nic’s entertaining talk provoked many questions from his near-capacity audience.
Nic is a staff member of the Solway Firth Partnership and is also involved with the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere: www.gsabiosphere.org.uk
Our meetings take place in the clubhouse of the Wigtown and Bladnoch Golf Club and start at 2.30pm. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 2nd February, when Derek Farr will share with us his ‘Insight into Local Wildlife’. Please telephone Andrea Kay on 01671-402733 for further information about this and other forthcoming talks.
