La Traviata Verdi’s tragic opera about Violetta the courtesan and her doomed love affair with the nobleman, Alfredo, is a much-loved favourite of the opera world. Based on the novel La Dame aux Camélias by Alexandre Dumas, fils, published in 1848, the title ‘La Traviata’ means literally The Woman Who Strayed, or The Fallen Woman. This sumptuous 2007 production from Teatro Alla Scala sees Angela Gheorghiu as Violetta, a role for which she has received much acclaim throughout her career, with Ramón Vargas as Alfredo and Lorin Maazel conducting.

Sung in Italian with English subtitles.
