Ten year old Callum Gordon from Kirkcowan has been named the Young Turkey Keeper of the Year by Turkey Club UK.

The Penninghame School pupil was taken by surprise at school assembly on Wednesday when renowned turkey breeder Janice Houghton-Wallace came with a huge silver cup and rosette for Callum.

Callum keeps ten turkeys at his home and is responsible for the feeding, grooming and cleaning out of the turkeys.

Janice Houghton-Wallace, the secretary of Turkey Club UK said: “Callum won this award because it is clear that he recognises the responsibility you have when owning any animal. If his turkeys - which he loves - are to thrive then he realises that he needs to feed them, make sure they have sufficient water and keep them clean. He does this willingly every day and for a primary school youngster that is quite commendable.”
