IN a remarkable coup for the Galloway live music scene, critically acclaimed American singer/songwriter Chris Mills is performing in Newton Stewart this month - the only Scottish stop on his UK tour.
Mills, from Brooklyn, New York, is currently touring England promoting his new album - the decade encompassing retrospective “Heavy Years 2000- 2010”. The album traces Mills’ evolution from his roots in the Chicago alternative country scene to astute purveyor of orchestral pop and true American song-craft.
He comes to Newton Stewart for his only Scottish date on Thursday, September 15th, appearing at The Belted Galloway, the town’s newest café bar and multi purpose venue.
In late 90s Chicago, Mills rose to prominence through collaborations with Mekons Jon Langford and Sally Timms, and on bills with acts like Steve Earle, Wilco, Neko Case and My Morning Jacket. Over the next decade, Mills travelled constantly throughout the United States and Europe, developing a loyal following and touring with artists including Ben Folds, Andrew Bird, Califone, Bishop Allen, The Handsome Family and Lucero.
Support for the Newton Stewart gig comes from Liam Dullaghan, his friend and fellow tunesmith from Northampton, and local roots-noir band Steve Dowling and the Obliviates.
This event is promoted by “Sleepy Eyed”, a local independent DIY gig collective, who are not-for-profit, and in association with local label Distilled Records and Unit 7 Studio, both based in Bladnoch.
Sleepy Eyed stated ‘ This is our first gig and we are definitely punching above our weight. In our opinion, he is one of the finest artists around today. We are truly proud to present a great night of music, with the help of our supporters, many of whom are donating financially or in-kind to make it happen. We hope that local music fans take this unique opportunity to come out and support the independent music scene.’
Tickets are on sale now from the promoters (01671 402974) and The Belted Galloway. More information and news from www.facebook.com/sleepyeyedmusic, www.sleepyeyed.tumblr.com and www.chris-mills.com
