Big Lit is better than ever this year

2016 is the 10th Anniversary of The Bakehouse in Gatehouse of Fleet which since 2006 has hosted many of the finest writers from Scotland and beyond.

From the work of The Bakehouse sprang BIG LIT The Stewartry Book Festival which has gone from strength to strength since it began as part of the Dumfries and Galloway Arts Festival in 2011. This year it has grown even bigger, with the expansion of activities for young people.

This year, BIG LIT celebrates three literary icons from three different generations – William Shakespeare, Jane Austen and Rabindranath Tagore.

BIG LIT will mark the 400th Anniversary of Shakespeare’s death in intriguing fashion with readings by popular actor/broadcaster Peter Marinker of Shakespeare’s early sonnets.

“They express Shakespeare’s unconditional, platonic love for his 19 year-old patron,” says Peter, “and give us a fascinating glimpse into the personal history of the greatest poet in the English language.”
