Teenage piping sensation Amy Ritchie from Newton Stewart is still on a high after winning the UK Championships in Belfast with Lochmaben Pipe Band recently.
Amy, who turned 15 the day of the victory, took up the pipes a couple of years ago and initially played with the Lochryan Pipe Band, a 4B rated band. But to get more experience, she then joined the Lochmaben Pipe Band as they are a 4A rated band. Since joining, Amy and her band mates have also filled the runners-up spot in the British Championships at Bathgate.
Asked about her feelings being a UK champion, Amy replied: “Winning was a weird feeling. Afterwards we went back to our hotel and played our pipes in celebration for a bit before we had a meal.”
The keen piper says she plans to keep piping whatever she does in the future and is very grateful to her dad, Steven, who drives her the three-hour round trip to Lochmaben every Thursday as well as every other Sunday for band practice.
