World oceans day on the crest of a wave

THE ever popular World Oceans Day rolled into Port William last Sunday with the weather gods once more smiling on this educational event.
It was standing room only for local chef Douglas Lisi’s Cook Off between media correspondent Bruce McKenzie and MSP Aileen McLeod. Both were watched closely by the capacity crowd as they created a series of mouth-watering dishes that featured sustainable seafood.
In the main tents there were displays from the Newton Stewart Sub Aqua Club with information on the many wrecks that lie off the coastline as well as an old fashioned divers helmet and boots. Also show casing their involvement in maritime ecology and sustainability were the RSPB, the Galloway Fisheries Trust, Crichton Carbon Centre, Solway Seashells, the Solway Firth Partnership and PIRSAC.
There were lots of activities for everyone to take part in – the Dumfries and Galloway Council Ranger, Elizabeth Tindall took groups to explore life in the rock pools; RSPB hunted for washed up items to make a beach collage; Dragonfly Dreaming Puppet Theatre performed their new Great Marine Show, while Jean Atkin, local award winning poet, took a group on a Beach Poetry Treasure Hunt and then wrote poems about what they found. And an unexpected bonus was the local band, the Razorbills playing on the beach.
“Everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves”, said Clair McFarlan, Project Officer with Solway Firth Partnership. She went on, “There was something for everyone and lots of fun and sunshine!”
The lucky prize winner of the Solway Firth Partnership Feedback Prize Draw was Kat Henry from near Newton Stewart. She won a Deep Blue DVD and Oceans Book and said, “I am delighted with the prize. The day was excellent with lots of information.”
The event is organised by Solway Firth Partnership in conjunction with Port William Community Council, Machars Action and Dumfries and Galloway Council and is funded by Awards for All, Scottish Natural Heritage, E-ON Energy and Renewables, Dumfries and Galloway Council and the Scottish Book Trust through Creative Scotland.
