Shoppers help good causes
The smoking cessation team with Sainsbury's staff
SAINSBURY’S in Newton Stewart hoped to raise funds and awareness for two groups last week.
Customers were able to talk to representatives from Healthcare Scotland about their smoking cessation campaign, and have their bags packed by representatives from our local branch of the Mentoring and Befriending Service.
The Dumfries and Galloway Befriending Project is an early intervention service which exists to promote the wellbeing of vulnerable young people, aged 8-18, at difficult periods in their lives, building social networks and offering a range of coping strategies. This is done through one-to-one befriending of a young person with an accredited adult enjoying community based activities. If you would like further information about volunteering with the project, please call 01671 403690.
In partnership with the Scottish Government, the Smoking Cessation campaign was in the store to offer help and support to those who are thinking about quitting smoking. It was very popular on the day with many customers either getting advice or signing-up to long term support and assistance.
Store manager Debbie Barnes said: “Sainsbury’s is committed to promoting a healthy lifestyle, and getting good advice and support to help someone who wants to quit smoking is very important. The Befriending Project plays such an essential role in our community, and our staff and customers are always so supportive of the people and organisations fundraising in the store. We look forward to working with the project in the future.”
