ON Wednesday 19 September Penninghame Primary School and Nursery held a pyjama day and raised almost £1000 as part of Yorkhill Week.

Yorkhill Week aims to raise desperately needed funds for Yorkhill Children’s Foundation in order to continue supporting children and families treated at Yorkhill Hospital and related facilities.

Throughout the morning children participated in different activities such as PopDance (ran by Emma Louise Dance School), Hula Hooping (ran by Denise Brawls), Circuits (ran by Active Schools). Building Healthy Communities also brought in Wiis and children had a go on Wii Sports. The Fire brigade and the Police also brought in their vehicles and children had the opportunity to explore the vehicles. The Nursery children also had their faces and nails painted by youth workers from the council’s Community Learning and Development team.

One of the most popular attractions of the day was a visit by the new Cream O Galloway ice cream van who kindly donated a percentage of their profits.

Children guessed the date of the teddy’s birthday (donated by Newton Stewart Army Cadets), the number of sweets in the jar and had their nails painted. Children also brought in 1p, 2p and 5p coins to their class to see which class could collect the most money. P7 were the winners collecting £27.57! In addition to this, parents donated baking and ran a very successful baking stall.

Mrs Hudson, P1/2 teacher, said: “We are very grateful to all the parents, community groups and the DEHS who helped make this day such a success.”

In the afternoon there was a big Pyjama Party disco ably compered by Jason Adair, the school’s Janitor.

Mrs McQuat, P3/4 teacher, said: “Thank you very much to everyone who donated their time and energy. Huge thanks must also go to Anne McShane who coordinated all the community volunteers through CLD.”
